![]() ![]() ![]() In subsequent retellings, that night resembled a wacky sitcom, all the characters scrambling before everything works out harmlessly in the end. Even if the details were not exactly fact, the stories were true in their own way Rickey was on his own schedule, and, as would be a defining characteristic of over a quarter-century of professional baseball, he was born with the element of surprise, capable of transforming the calm into the chaotic, always a step ahead of an unsuspecting world. ![]() Another said Rickey was so unexpected, so calm and quiet in Bobbie Earl's belly and not yet ready to join the world, that neither she nor his father, John Henley, had any reason to expect a Christmas birth. One story said it snowed so hard on the South Side that Thursday night in Chicago that just reaching the hospital was an ordeal. The surviving details of Christmas 1958, all tangled and swirled in legend, conspired to make the simple fact that Rickey, of all people, being born on Christmas Day felt preordained. You could say that Rickey Henderson was destined to be a gift. Sports writer Howard Bryant's new biography, "Rickey: The Life and Legend of an American Original" (Mariner), tells the captivating story of Rickey Henderson, the Hall of Famer who holds the MLB records for runs and stolen bases, and how he helped change the game forever. ![]() ![]() ![]() In fact, it is daily choice to live right. Really loved this book! Being a christian is not easy. First Date was a little heavy on it, so if thats your thing- go for it! I don't want to give spoilers but when Addy learns more about what happened to her missionary parents, it was really really sad and might be a sensitive subject to the really young YA readers.Although the chemistry between Addy and Jonathan (the presidents son) was good, I would have liked to have read more scenes with the two of them together.Oh, and it was nice seeing the name Jonathan, thats my husbands name :)Overall, I rate First Date 3 out of 5 stars, its was a nice easy read.I received an e-galley via Netgalley and Thomas Nelson in exchange for an honest review Read more I am not a a religious person but I dont mind reading YA books with light religious themes. ![]() That in my opinion, could have a little less "christian-ness" to it. First Date is a clean christian contemporary YA read. Addy did not want to be in the spot light but reluctantly went on the show. ![]() First Date by Krista Mcgee is about Addy, an orphaned daughter of missionaries, who gets selected to be on a realty tv show about winning a dream prom date with the hunky presidents' son. ![]() ![]() ![]() In 1914, canal tolls totaled $4,000,000 in 1970, without any increase in the amount of the tolls, the total was $100,000,000.government had spent a total of $75,000,000 to acquire the Louisiana Territory, Florida, California, New Mexico and other western land, the Gadsden Purchase, Alaska and the Philippines. ![]() ![]()

This text is aimed at students entering first year university courses. ![]() ![]() The premise of the book is based on a simple maxim by Marcus Aurelius: It’s a book about using the best parts of Stoicism to solve the actual problems that ambitious, hardworking people face. I’ve long written about these things on my blog but never in a book. As all of you know, I’ve always been a student of Stoicism, a practical philosophy favored by influential Greek and Roman statesman and thinkers. The book is The Obstacle Is The Way: The Timeless Art of Turning Trials Into Triumphs. I can’t tell you how grateful I am for all the connections I’ve made over the years with you. That amazing book guided me to many other books (many we’ve read together) and eventually led to the creation of this book (which I am as proud of as I have been of anything I’ve ever done). It started with a decision to really get into reading, which brought me to an old book (Marcus Aurelius’ Meditations). I’m coming to you, my readers-many of whom I’ve known since I started on this journey-to officially announce my book, The Obstacle Is The Way, and offer these amazing bonuses as a thank you for your support. ![]() ![]() I’ve waited to write this post since I was 19 years old. ![]() ![]() ![]() Dickens, in his lively description of the present, implements a variety of literary devices that conjure a positive and excited response from readers. ![]() The third example of tone in A Christmas Carol is when the Ghost of Christmas Present takes Ebenezer Scrooge on a walk through the city streets on Christmas day, taking in the jumble of activity. There is a wonderful application of tone that sets a fast-paced and jovial atmosphere as Scrooge recollects his past. ![]() ![]() The second case of tone that will be noted is when the Ghost of Christmas Past brings Scrooge back to a night at Fezziwig’s and the party that ensued. The first tone that evokes a response in the reader is in the very beginning of the novel the narrative voice switches up its tone to reassure readers that the story will not be too serious and will have a positive outcome. The literary devices used in A Christmas Carol work together to create a certain emotional atmosphere through the narrator’s tone. Charles Dickens’ successful control of the narrator’s and characters’ tones in A Christmas Carol evokes a variety of responses from readers. ![]() ![]() ![]() Start preparing early in spring and work hard for good food in summer. The food industry makes us disconnect with our food and forget what real food is. ![]() ![]() Here are the 3 most useful lessons I got from reading this book: Kingsolver encourages all of us, even if we can’t grow everything we eat, to start doing what we can to source our own food. They packed up their belongings and moved from Arizona to Appalachia to start learning to grow their own food. Sure, you can buy organic, but what if you could know the source of your food? Or better yet, what if your garden could be that source?Īnimal, Vegetable, Miracle: A Year of Food Life by Barbara Kingsolver tells the story of her own family who decided to dramatically change their lives by only eating locally and growing their own food for a year. And you’re probably wondering what you can do about it. This disconnection from the source of the food we consume has allowed for some pretty unhealthy and unethical things to happen to our food, which is now mostly mass-produced. But do you ever stop to think about where stores get their food? Where did your last home-cooked meal come from? If you’re like most people, it probably came from the supermarket. 1-Sentence-Summary: Animal, Vegetable, Miracle gives ways to improve your health and the environment by learning how to garden, cook, and eat more fruits and vegetables. ![]() ![]() They are tightly, even dizzingly plotted, even if sometimes someone is about to do something so eyepoppingly stupid you want to yell out "hey! You can forgive that, though. ![]() Some minor characters in one book become major characters in another, or vice versa. They're all set in the same universe, in Mississippi or New Orleans, and you start to feel like if you woke up tomorrow morning in Natchez, you'd head right over to the Trace, and if you were in New Orleans, no problem locating the FBI field office on the shore of Lake Pontchartrain. I'm not a big mystery suspense reader, but I've been on a Greg Iles binge in the past five weeks. ![]() ![]() ![]() They don't do anything particulary exciting. ![]() It's more just a sudden, unrealistic, barely explained "ta da" of "love." And the couple is boring.their conversations seem very juvenile, both in the way they express themselves and in their feelings. By this I mean the author doesn't allow any situation in the book for the characters to grow to "love" each other. So why is the book a "snooze fest?" The emotion development of the characters is nil. The family is saved.there's a little more after this but it's not very exciting. Juliana ends up enlisting Asher's (hero and love interest to Juliana) help to steal the letters. ![]() He plans to use the letters as blackmail. How? The little sister wrote a few passionate letters to Ormsby (villan), who took advantage of the young teenage beauty so he could trump all the suitors after her first Season by marrying her. Juliana (heroine and widow of 28) is in dire straits because her sister (age 17) got the family into trouble. I won't get into a serious explanation of the plot - it's pretty basic, especially considering the length of the novel. ![]() |
